Sagop Bakhaw

Protecting the roots of our coastlines by restoring mangroves, empowering fisherfolk, and building a generation of environmental stewards.

Sagop Bakhaw

Sagop Bakhaw is JCI Mandaue’s Adopt-a-Mangrove Program, a long-term environmental initiative dedicated to the protection, restoration, and sustainability of mangrove ecosystems across Mandaue City and nearby coastal communities. The program directly supports fisherfolk from the four coastal barangays of Mandaue City covering the North and South mangrove patches, as well as Barangay Santa Rosa in Olango Island, recognizing that healthy mangrove forests are deeply tied to the survival of both marine life and coastal livelihoods.

Mangroves serve as one of nature’s strongest protectors, acting as natural barriers against storm surges, coastal erosion, and flooding while serving as breeding grounds for fish, crabs, and other marine resources essential to fisherfolk. Through Sagop Bakhaw, JCI Mandaue strengthens this vital ecosystem through mangrove planting, nursery development, coastal clean-up drives, and the protection of mature mangrove forests, ensuring that both young and old mangroves continue to thrive. Beyond environmental conservation, the initiative helps secure the livelihood of fishing communities by preserving the habitats that sustain their daily catch.

At the same time, Sagop Bakhaw actively engages the youth sector, encouraging young people to take part in environmental stewardship, ecological education, and hands-on conservation efforts. More than planting trees, it is about planting responsibility, resilience, and a future where communities and nature grow together.

Objectives

To restore and protect mangrove ecosystems as critical coastal defenses and marine habitats.

To support fisherfolk livelihoods by preserving the environmental systems that sustain fishing communities.

To cultivate environmental stewardship among the youth and wider community through conservation, clean-up, and mangrove rehabilitation efforts.
