HeKaSi Basa
Reviving the roots of learning by reconnecting children to heritage, stories, and the joy of reading.
HeKaSi Basa is JCI Mandaue’s educational literacy initiative that seeks to bring back the essence of HeKaSi to today’s generation of learners. HeKaSi, short for Heograpiya, Kasaysayan, at Sibika (Geography, History, and Civics), was once a foundational subject in Philippine basic education that shaped a child’s understanding of identity, community, and nationhood. Through this initiative, JCI Mandaue reintroduces these important concepts in a child-friendly and engaging way, helping young learners reconnect with culture, values, and social awareness in a modern setting.
At the heart of the program is the promotion of reading, creativity, participation, and comprehension through purposefully written stories designed to be relatable and meaningful for children. One of its central learning tools is The Creation of Maya and Her Adventures, a storybook crafted to teach lessons while sparking imagination and curiosity. Through guided reading sessions, story discussions, and interactive conversations, children are encouraged to explore the meaning behind each story, share their thoughts, and strengthen comprehension. Complementing this is the Maya Coloring Storybook, which nurtures creativity and self-expression, turning learning into an experience that is both educational and inspiring. Conducted usually during the summer break, the HeKaSi Basa program also includes the distribution of school supplies to help prepare children for the upcoming school year, ensuring they return to school equipped, encouraged, and supported.
